If a doctor is not board-certified are they allowed to practice medicine in New York?

A: The answer is "yes."
After a doctor graduates from medical school, they must take a licensing exam in order to practice medicine in New York. There is no requirement to become board-certified. The reason most physicians become board-certified is that it is the highest certification a doctor can achieve in his or her specialty. It sets a standard of knowledge and education so that any doctor in any part of the country should have the same basic minimum level of knowledge and understanding for that particular medical specialty.

There are plenty of good doctors who are not board-certified. Likewise, there are board-certified doctors who are less than stellar physicians.

Board certification requires that a doctor perform additional years of postgraduate training known as a residency before becoming eligible to take the Board certification exams.
